Irrespective of what discipline, profession or industry you work for, research is an integral strategy for investigating data and/or confirming or refuting the research findings. Research, whether it is basic or applied, needs to identify the nature and scope of the research problem. This is where a ‘qualitative’ or ‘quantitative’ approach to research gives weight by means of their associated methods and traits to understand the nature and scope of the research problem. The following sections introduce these approaches to research and ‘how’ each of these approaches influences the way research is undertaken.
